Nepal Government to Form Probe Commission on Gen Z Movement Incidents

The government is preparing to form a commission to investigate the Gen Z movement incidents of September 8–9, which resulted in 74 deaths and widespread damage, with a former Supreme Court justice likely to lead the inquiry.

The government is preparing to launch a formal investigation into the tragic incidents and violent activities that occurred during the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9.

According to sources close to the government, the Cabinet meeting scheduled for this evening is expected to make an official decision on forming an inquiry commission. While it has not yet been finalized who will lead the body, discussions are underway to appoint a former Supreme Court justice as the head of the commission.

Casualties, Damage and Government Plan

On September 8, at least 17 people lost their lives in Kathmandu alone. The death toll across the country has now reached 74. The following day, on September 9, arson attacks targeted key government offices, including the Supreme Court and Singha Durbar, as well as the private residences of political leaders.

The government has pledged to conduct a fair and transparent investigation and take action against those found responsible. Sources indicated that the commission will be given full legal authority to carry out its mandate.

Political Context

The Gen Z movement had far-reaching political consequences, leading to the collapse of the then KP Sharma Oli–led government. In its place, an interim government was formed under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. The Karki administration now faces the crucial task of restoring public trust through impartial investigations into the events of those two days.
