Cooperative depositors affected by troubled cooperatives staged a peaceful demonstration in Buddhanagar on Sunday. The protest was held in front of the Office for the Management of Problematic Cooperatives.
The demonstrators demanded the resignation of the office bearers. Kushal KC, central chairperson of the National Campaign for the Protection of Cooperative Depositors, said victims have been protesting for 38 months, yet the government has ignored their concerns.
He said victims have not received justice because the office created to address their issues was filled through political appointments. “We had four agreements with previous governments.
After that, we also held multiple rounds of discussions with the current government, including talks with the Prime Minister,” he said. “During those discussions, the Prime Minister responded positively, assuring that our deposits would be returned — even saying the government would amend laws, if necessary, to make deposit return possible.”
However, KC accused the office of causing further hardship to depositors in the name of the reconciliation process. “We have already made the evidence public. Therefore, they must resign, and our deposits must be returned,” he said.
KC added that the protest would continue until their demands are met. He further warned that if the government does not respond, victims will begin demonstrations at Maitighar starting tomorrow.
