Teenage Girl Shot Dead in Sunsari, Nepal; Brother-in-Law Suspected

An 18-year-old girl was shot and killed in Sunsari’s Harinagar Municipality early Monday. Police have identified her brother-in-law as the prime suspect.

Sunsari, Nepal — An 18-year-old girl was shot and killed early Monday morning in Harinagar Rural Municipality, Sunsari District, triggering shock and concern across the local community in southeastern Nepal.

The fatal shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m. in Maharam Chowk, Ward No. 6 of Harinagar. The victim, identified as Arshi Khatun, died at the scene. Preliminary investigations by Sunsari District Police suggest the suspect is her brother-in-law.

According to police, the alleged shooter has been identified as 29-year-old Azad Miyan Jat, a resident of Ward No. 16, Ghurna, Patraha Panchayat, Bihar, India. He is reported to have fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Sunsari District Police spokesperson DSP Yograj Khatiwada stated that the department was informed of the shooting at approximately 3:45 a.m., after which a police team was immediately dispatched to the area.

The crime scene is located approximately two kilometers southeast of the Ghuskihat Police Post. Authorities recovered an unfired bullet from the site, which may aid in the ongoing investigation.

The victim’s body has been sent to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan for a post-mortem examination. Police say a full-scale investigation is underway and efforts to apprehend the suspect are ongoing.
