PM Sushila Karki Directs Election Commission to Fix Online Voter Registration Issues Ahead of Nepal Election 2025

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has directed the Election Commission to take immediate action to fix ongoing issues in online voter registration ahead of Nepal’s 2025 parliamentary elections.

KATHMANDU — Prime Minister Sushila Karki has expressed concern over rising complaints from citizens struggling to register their names in the online voter list. With the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5 (Fagun 21), the final deadline for new voter registration is November 15 (Kartik 30).

However, many applicants have reported problems due to technical errors in the Election Commission of Nepal’s online enrollment system. Service seekers have had to wait long hours at registration offices because of limited manpower, while others have faced issues selecting polling centers or entering citizenship numbers. Disabled citizens, families of martyrs, and victims of the GenZ movement have also faced difficulties completing the process.

Prime Minister’s Directive to Ensure Efficiency

Responding to these concerns, Prime Minister Karki directed the Election Commission to take immediate action. According to her press coordinator Ram Rawal, she issued a three-point directive to make the voter registration process faster and more efficient.

She instructed election offices to extend working hours or add shifts to handle the growing workload and ensure that no citizen is left behind. Karki also advised deploying additional staff where needed and coordinating with relevant government bodies to maintain smooth operations across the country.

Integration of Data and Deadline Review

To improve the process further, the Prime Minister urged the Election Commission and the National ID and Civil Registration Department to work together and use existing national databases for voter registration. She also instructed the Commission to review the November 15 deadline if technical problems continue to slow progress.

Additionally, the Home Ministry has been asked to provide all necessary logistical and administrative support to ensure voter registration runs smoothly nationwide.

With the election date approaching, the Prime Minister’s initiative aims to make sure that every eligible Nepali citizen, especially those from remote and marginalized communities, can register and vote without facing unnecessary obstacles.
