Kathmandu — The Secretariat meeting of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), CPN-UML, resumed at party chair KP Sharma Oli’s residence in Gundu on Sunday morning. After multiple postponements, the session has finally moved ahead in full swing.
The meeting, first convened on Friday, was expected to continue on Saturday but was postponed when Chairman Oli experienced a sudden health issue. It resumed at 11 a.m. Sunday, focusing on major political agendas including the party’s overall direction, organizational restructuring, and the proposal for Parliament reinstatement.
Divided Opinions Over Oli’s Proposal
Party insiders said Oli’s call for reinstating Parliament has drawn mixed responses among the leadership. Many members argued that the UML should now channel its energy into strengthening internal organization and preparing for the upcoming elections rather than revisiting earlier parliamentary issues.
Senior Vice-Chairperson Ishwar Pokharel, and Vice-Chairpersons Surendra Pandey, Yubaraj Gyawali, Asta Laxmi Shakya, Bishnu Paudel, Ram Bahadur Thapa (Badal), and Guru Baral have already presented their views. Some of them suggested that Chairman Oli should open the path for new leadership and help take the party in a renewed direction.
Next Speakers and Common Commitment
General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali have expressed firm support for Oli’s proposal. Meanwhile, several members calling for a moderate approach have urged deeper self-assessment and a balanced way forward.
Sunday’s meeting is also scheduled to hear from Deputy General Secretary Prithvi Subba Gurung and Secretaries Yogesh Bhattarai, Gokarna Bista, Chhabilal Bishwakarma, Raghubir Mahaseth, Padma Aryal, and Lekharaj Bhatt, according to sources.
Despite internal differences, party leaders have expressed a shared goal — to strengthen the UML’s unity and restore public confidence in its leadership.
