Nawalpur – Continuous rainfall in eastern Nepal’s Nawalpur district has brought transportation to a halt, stranding travelers after both a temporary highway diversion and an alternative route in Dumkibas became unusable.
In East Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), the Dumkibas section of the highway had been operating through a temporary diversion since the collapse of the main bridge over the Binayi River. However, heavy rains beginning Sunday morning have caused further disruption. According to the Nawalpur District Police Office, flooding in the Kharnge stream has made the alternate route—used by small and passenger vehicles—completely impassable.
Highway Remains Blocked; Bridge Construction Near Completion in Dumkibas
With all routes blocked, many travelers remain stranded mid-journey. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Madhu Nepal confirmed that both the Binayi River diversion was washed away and the alternate road flooded. As a result, vehicles have been moved to safe holding areas.
The alternate route, connecting Hongsi Gate, Sardi, and Jyamire, had served as the main option for smaller vehicles. However, the flooding of the Kharnge stream has cut off that access. Larger vehicles, which were using the Binayi diversion, are now also unable to pass, leading to a complete highway closure.
Authorities say the construction of a new bridge at Dumkibas is in its final phase and is expected to resolve the diversion issues permanently. Nevertheless, the Daunne section continues to pose seasonal challenges, as rain-soaked, slippery roads obstruct traffic due to unfinished roadwork and weak infrastructure.
