Former PM Baburam Bhattarai Warns Gen Z Movement Could Become Counter-Revolution

Former PM Baburam Bhattarai has warned that Nepal’s Gen Z movement risks turning into a counter-revolution, raising concerns about infiltration and targeted violence.

Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has warned that the ongoing Gen Z movement may be veering off course and risk turning into a counter-revolution. Recalling his earlier caution that “wolves in sheep’s clothing” could infiltrate the protests, Bhattarai expressed doubt that the recent violent incidents were carried out by genuine Gen Z youths.

He suggested that the arson attacks on key institutions such as Parliament, Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, and the residences of political leaders appeared to be the result of a planned conspiracy. Bhattarai also shared on social media that his own residence had come under attack.

According to him, had security personnel and aides not intervened in time, his 96-year-old father and family members could have faced grave danger. He claimed that some of those involved did not resemble the young demonstrators but instead looked like suspicious groups from outside.

“Who are the people setting fire to the pillars of democracy, and what is their real objective?” Bhattarai asked, urging Gen Z protesters to engage in self-reflection. He further advised young people to study history and draw concrete lessons, citing the example of the French Revolution.

Expressing grief over the destruction of many of his books in the arson attack, Bhattarai said he considers books his most valuable possession. He recounted that he was able to carry with him The Human Nature by Edward O. Wilson, often referred to as “the Darwin of the 21st century,” while escaping the attack. He stressed that youths should also prioritize knowledge and study as part of their movement.
