Foreign Employment Department Fire in Kathmandu Disrupts Services and Flights

The Foreign Employment Department in Kathmandu was partially damaged by fire during protests. Officials said labor services continue online, but airport closure has disrupted flights and migrant worker plans.

Kathmandu — The Department of Foreign Employment has been affected by a fire during the recent protests. According to Director General Kamal Prasad Bhattarai, one of the three building blocks was damaged, while sensitive structures remain secure.

Bhattarai said, “The main facility that provides labor permits has been safeguarded, so essential operations are not entirely obstructed.” With prohibitory orders and a curfew in place, the department reported difficulties in providing regular services such as labor permit issuance, investigations, case management, relief, and rescue.

Officials confirmed that services available online or via telephone are continuing. Until the situation stabilizes, employees will provide services remotely from home. Around 2,000 Nepali youths leave the country daily for foreign employment.

Since workers cannot depart without final labor approval, the disruption has directly impacted their plans. Due to the security situation, Tribhuvan International Airport has been closed until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, affecting scheduled flights.
