Understanding BP Koirala’s Vision Essential to Nepal’s Monarchy Crisis: Nepali Congress General Secretary

Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwprakash Sharma said Nepal’s monarchy struggles today result from misinterpreting BP Koirala’s vision, emphasizing the need to apply his principles for political stability.

Kathmandu — Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwprakash Sharma said Nepal’s current challenges with the monarchy are due to a failure to fully understand the vision of BP Koirala. He spoke at a seminar titled “The Foundation of National Development and People’s Progress: BP’s Ideology” on Tuesday at BP Memorial Hospital, Basundhara, on the 43rd BP Koirala Memorial Day.

Sharma said BP’s statement, “The king and my throat are connected,” was misinterpreted by the monarchy, which eventually led to the abolition of the monarchy in Nepal. He said this misinterpretation significantly affected Nepal’s political structure.

He added that major political forces in Nepal—including the Nepali Congress, communist parties, and the monarchy—have been weak in understanding BP Koirala’s ideology. This weakness has caused the country to miss important opportunities.

According to Sharma, BP Koirala’s vision of political tolerance, democratic values, and inclusive development needs to be clearly understood and applied in Nepal’s current political system. Only then can the monarchy play a meaningful and strong role.

Sharma concluded that Nepal’s political history has reached a turning point due to failure in properly grasping BP’s philosophy, and learning from this is essential for progress.
