UML Chair KP Sharma Oli Confirms Party Participation in February 21 House Election

UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has confirmed the party’s participation in the February 21 House election, stressing full preparation despite constitutional disputes.

CPN–UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has confirmed that the party will firmly participate in the House of Representatives election scheduled for February 21. In a conversation with Nagarik daily’s Editor-in-Chief Gunraj Luintel, Oli said the party has placed election preparation as its top priority.

According to him, despite the constitutional dispute over the reinstatement of the House of Representatives, the UML is committed to remaining in the electoral process. “The rumors suggesting that the election will not take place do not affect UML’s preparation and commitment,” he stated.

UML Completing Registration for House Election

The UML is preparing to complete its separate registration for the House of Representatives election today. Election law requires distinct party registration for each election, which is why the earlier National Assembly registration did not apply to the lower-house polls.

Central Election Department Chief Neeraj Acharya confirmed that the UML will register within the given timeframe. He said the party will not withdraw based on speculation that the election might not be held. “Whether the election is held or not, updating our organizational status is part of our plan,” he said.

Oli Blames Government for Election Uncertainty

Oli said the government is responsible for creating doubts regarding the election. He argued that attempts to blame the UML for unfavorable election conditions are baseless.

In recent days, the UML has been holding street protests, rallies, and public outreach programs calling for the reinstatement of the dissolved House of Representatives. The party has labeled reinstatement as its “political bottom line,” intensifying its pressure campaign.

After convening a meeting of the dissolved House, the UML publicly questioned the constitutionality of the dissolution and demanded judicial review. However, the party has not filed a petition at the Supreme Court. Oli added, “Our core position is clear — the House of Representatives must be reinstated. But we are also continuing efforts to seek a political solution.”
