U.S. President Donald Trump has briefed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the conditions laid out by Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace in Ukraine. Reuters reported that Trump spoke with Zelensky by phone on Saturday after meeting Putin in Alaska for three hours to discuss the war.
During the talks, Putin pressed Russia’s territorial claims and suggested he would agree to stabilize the frontlines if Kyiv withdrew entirely from the Donetsk region — a key industrial hub now at the center of Moscow’s strategy.
Zelensky rejected the proposal outright, noting that Russia has already seized about one-fifth of Ukraine, including a quarter of Donetsk. He has repeatedly said Ukraine will not surrender its land.
Trump, meanwhile, urged Kyiv to prepare for a lasting peace, warning that compromise may be necessary. “Ukraine must reach an agreement, because Russia is extremely powerful, and Ukraine is not,” he said.
Zelensky has been invited to the White House on Monday for further talks. At least one European leader is also expected to attend. A trilateral summit with Putin could follow soon after. Putin has suggested that future talks should be held in Moscow, an idea Trump described as “not impossible.”
