’s traffic police maintained strict vigilance during Tihar 2025, preventing major road accidents and booking 199 drunk drivers to ensure safer travel across the Valley.

KATHMANDU — As the Tihar festival filled Kathmandu with lights, music, and celebration, traffic police worked tirelessly to keep the city’s roads safe. Their constant presence and quick response helped prevent major accidents throughout the festival period.

According to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Office, only 16 minor two-wheeler accidents were recorded across the Valley during the main days of Tihar. “Senior officers were deployed at key locations to manage traffic and assist the public,” said Superintendent Naresh Raj Subedi, the department’s spokesperson. “Because of their effort, no serious incidents occurred.”

Police also took strong action against drunk driving. A total of 199 drivers were booked for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, while 15 people sustained minor injuries. Officials said constant monitoring and awareness campaigns played a major role in keeping roads safe.

Senior Superintendent Navaraj Adhikari, chief of the Metropolitan Traffic Police, said special surveillance was maintained in busy areas such as Ratnapark, Koteshwor, Kalanki, Chabahil, New Bus Park, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur. “CCTV monitoring allowed us to spot reckless driving in real time,” he said. “Our goal was simple — to make sure everyone reached home safely.”

Adhikari, who personally joined field patrols during Tihar, praised his officers for their dedication. “While families celebrated Bhaitika at home, our team was out on the streets protecting lives,” he said.

Traffic police officials said similar measures will continue during upcoming festivals to ensure safer and more disciplined roads across the Kathmandu Valley.
