Kathmandu, – In a pointed address during Saturday’s session of Nepal’s House of Representatives, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Member of Parliament Roshan Karki delivered a scathing critique of the Home Minister’s handling of the ongoing visit visa scandal. Karki described the minister as “outwardly simple but inwardly cunning,” implying deliberate efforts to avoid accountability.
She alleged that the government’s formation of an investigation committee was merely symbolic and aimed at protecting those involved in wrongdoing. “The structure of the committee resembles a situation where the cat is made the witness for stolen milk. This is not an investigation—it’s a cover-up operation,” Karki stated.
Financial Extortion and Human Trafficking Allegations Raise Concerns
Highlighting serious financial misconduct, Karki claimed that millions of rupees are being collected daily under the guise of visit visa processing. “Has the government been given permission to trade in the misery of poor and defenseless citizens? Who granted the right to sell Nepali people so easily?” she questioned.
Karki expressed alarm at what she referred to as unchecked human trafficking facilitated through the visit visa process and criticized the government’s passive stance. She issued a strong warning to the Home Minister, saying, “One day, everyone will have to step down from power. When that day comes, how will you face the people of Nepal?”
Moral Accountability Urged Amid Mounting Parliamentary Pressure
Invoking the words of Nepal’s late democratic leader BP Koirala, she said, “Those who silently endure the tyranny of their leaders are either slaves or extreme opportunists.” Karki called on parliamentarians to reflect on their moral and political responsibilities.
Her comments sparked tension in Parliament, with no immediate rebuttal from the ruling party. However, several opposition members voiced support for her statements. Calls for a full investigation and increased transparency in the visit visa controversy are intensifying, both within Parliament and across public discourse.
How the government and the Home Minister respond to these allegations in the coming days remains to be seen. But Karki’s remarks have undoubtedly amplified public concern surrounding the visit visa issue in Nepal.
