Rasuwa,— A devastating overnight flood has caused widespread destruction in Rasuwa district, putting hundreds of lives at risk. The disaster occurred at approximately 3 a.m. when a sudden surge of water from the Chinese side dramatically increased the flow of the Bhotekoshi River.
According to the Rasuwa District Police Office, 15 people are currently missing. The missing individuals include three Nepal Police personnel, six Nepali laborers, two Nepali vehicle drivers, and four Chinese workers. Authorities have not yet located any of the missing persons.
The most severe damage occurred at the Miteri Bridge, a key infrastructure link between Nepal and China. The floodwaters completely washed away the bridge, halting direct cross-border movement. “The bridge is gone. Cross-border travel is entirely suspended,” police officials confirmed.
Preliminary reports indicate that several newly imported electric vehicles and cargo containers near the Rasuwagadhi customs area were also swept away. A comprehensive damage assessment is ongoing, and detailed reports are yet to be finalized. Due to destruction of transport and trade infrastructure, along with potential loss of life, authorities have stated that the flood has had a serious national-level impact.
The Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force are actively involved in ongoing rescue efforts. “Some stranded individuals have been moved to safety, and rescue operations are continuing. Helicopters will be deployed if needed,” a police spokesperson said.
Local authorities have accelerated efforts to relocate residents from high-risk areas to safer locations. As the Bhotekoshi River continues to flow at dangerously high levels, the public is urged to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
