Ramesh Lekhak Warns Special Convention Could Split Nepali Congress, Urges Regular General Convention by Mid-January

Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak has warned that holding a special convention could divide the party and called for unity to complete membership verification and hold a regular general convention by mid-January.

KATHMANDU — Nepali Congress Central Committee member Ramesh Lekhak has cautioned that calls for a special convention could deepen divisions within the party rather than promote unity.

Speaking at Wednesday’s Central Committee meeting, Lekhak said, “We must choose the path of a regular convention. A special convention would lead Congress into a political jungle with no single way out.”

He warned that although 40 percent of members can propose a special convention under the party statute, its procedural clarity is lacking and may lead to internal disputes. “At such a time, everyone will have their own interpretation, and internal cracks will widen,” he said.

Regular Convention Possible by Mid-January

Lekhak emphasized that if the verification and distribution of active membership are completed on time, the party could hold its regular 15th General Convention within the Nepali month of Poush (mid-January).

However, citing past experience, he said the process could be delayed due to thousands of complaints requiring review. “It may take six to eight months to handle all grievances, so holding the convention before the election could be difficult,” he added.

Call for Unity in Decision-Making

Lekhak stressed that whatever decision the Central Committee makes, it should move forward in unity. He urged Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka to hold consultations with all factions and bring a common proposal.

“The general secretaries have proposed different dates. We can bring those together and reach a common understanding,” he said. In conclusion, Lekhak added that the party should focus on preparing for upcoming elections rather than debating the reinstatement of the House of Representatives.
