Kathmandu — Prime Minister Sushila Karki will deliver her first address to the nation on Thursday evening since taking office. The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers said she will speak at 6 p.m., focusing on political unrest, relief programs, and preparations for the upcoming elections.
Karki, who became prime minister on September 12 (Bhadra 27), is expected to address the aftermath of the Gen-Z uprising of September 8–9 (Bhadra 23–24). The protests, marked by clashes, vandalism, and arson, claimed at least 74 lives and left many others injured. Her speech will also emphasize reconstruction efforts and the government’s responsibility to respond to those events.
Relief Measures and Upcoming Elections
Her address will highlight support for the families of victims and treatment for the injured. The government has pledged NPR 1.5 million to each family of those who died and promised free medical care for those hurt in the protests.
Another major point of her speech will be the federal elections. The government has announced March 5 (Falgun 21) as the date for the House of Representatives election. The prime minister is expected to call on political parties to work together in creating a peaceful and credible electoral environment.
