Pokharel Says India–China Cannot Use Nepal’s Land Without Consent

CPN-UML leader Shankar Pokharel has warned India and China not to use Nepal’s territory in Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura without Nepal’s consent.

Dang, Nepal — CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has said India and China cannot use Nepal’s territory in Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura without Nepal’s consent. Speaking at a press conference organized by Press Chautari Nepal in Ghorahi, Pokharel emphasized that Nepal’s border position is clear in history, maps, and legal documents.

He cited the Sugauli Treaty as the basis of Nepal’s boundary and said no agreement should proceed without Nepal’s involvement. “Any attempt by the two neighbors to use Nepal’s land without our approval is unjustified. Such actions cannot be acceptable under any circumstances,” he stated.

Pokharel also argued that the current government has performed better than past administrations, pointing to stronger revenue collection, improved fiscal capacity, an investment-friendly climate, and renewed confidence in the private sector.

UML Prepares for Statute Convention

He announced that the UML’s second Statute Convention will be held on September 6–8 (Bhadra 21–23). The event will discuss three key proposals — political, organizational, and statutory amendments — with about 650,000 members expected to take part.

Pokharel further said it would not be appropriate for former President Bidya Devi Bhandari to return to active party politics. “A respected figure like the former president should not be kept confined at home. There is no restriction on social engagement. But returning to partisan politics would not be proper,” he added.
