Bhaktapur — Prime Minister Sushila Karki has expressed her support for featuring the Nepal Sambat calendar on upcoming series of Nepali currency notes, calling it an important step to recognize Nepal’s cultural heritage and national identity.
During a meeting with representatives from the Raṣṭriya Vibhuti Sankhadhar Sakhwa Pratiṣṭhan in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, the Prime Minister said she would hold discussions with the Finance Minister and the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank to explore the process for including Nepal Sambat on banknotes.
The delegation, led by the foundation’s chair Gyanram Shrestha, had invited her to attend the Nepal Sambat 1146 celebration and to pay tribute at the statue of national hero sankhadhar Sakhwa, who introduced the calendar centuries ago after freeing citizens from debt.
“Nepal Sambat represents the nation’s originality. Adding it to our currency would be a proud acknowledgment of our history,” Karki said. According to Shrestha, the Prime Minister noted that printing for the new Rs 500 note has already been completed, but future notes could include Nepal Sambat after formal consultation with the concerned authorities.
Karki also stated she would join the upcoming Nepal Sambat New Year celebration and lay a garland at Sankhadhar Sakhwa’s statue, reaffirming her respect for Nepal’s cultural legacy.
