Kathmandu – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to embark on a series of high-level international visits starting late June, as preparations intensify for official trips to Spain, India, and Turkmenistan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The first leg of the tour will take Oli to Seville, Spain, where he is scheduled to attend the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development from June 30 to July 3 (Asar 16–19). Organized under the United Nations framework, the summit will bring together global leaders, financial institutions, and civil society to discuss sustainable development financing.
Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that a delegation led by PM Oli will represent the country at the event. Nepal has also proposed a bilateral meeting with Spanish officials during the visit, though confirmation from Spain is still pending. If agreed, this meeting may include the signing of bilateral agreements between Kathmandu and Madrid.
Following the Spain visit, plans for a visit to India are underway. Sources indicate that the trip may take place in the second week of July (mid-Saun) or possibly in January 2025. Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi are in active discussions with Indian counterparts to finalize the details.
Encouraged by positive diplomatic signals from New Delhi, both countries are working to coordinate the visit. Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Shankar Sharma, is leading efforts from Delhi, while India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, is coordinating from Kathmandu.
To advance preparations, Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana (Deuba) is expected to visit New Delhi on December 18 (Poush 3) from Europe. She will attend the Indo-Nepal Economic Conference on December 20 and hold talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with PM Oli’s visit being a key agenda item.
Earlier plans for an India trip were delayed due to diplomatic hesitations, particularly following the Pahalgam terrorist attack and a lack of formal invitation from India. PM Oli instead visited China during that period. However, with improved bilateral sentiment, preparations for the India visit are now moving forward.
Turkmenistan Summit Marks Final Leg of Three-Nation Tour
In addition to Spain and India, Prime Minister Oli is preparing for a third visit—to Turkmenistan—to attend the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, scheduled for August 5–8 (Saun 20–23).
As Turkmenistan shares Nepal’s status as a landlocked developing country, Nepal considers this summit an important diplomatic opportunity under the United Nations framework. Foreign Ministry officials have confirmed that PM Oli will likely lead the national delegation to the international gathering.
This three-nation diplomatic mission underscores Nepal’s commitment to active bilateral and multilateral engagement. From regional diplomacy with India to participation in global development forums in Spain and Turkmenistan, PM Oli’s visits aim to strengthen Nepal’s international partnerships and global standing.
