Prime Minister Sushila Karki has briefed political parties on the government’s progress in recovering weapons stolen during the Gen-Z demonstrations and bringing escaped inmates back into custody.
She shared these updates during an all-party meeting on Wednesday, where she also discussed recent security actions and preparations for the upcoming elections. According to her, the government has been working quickly to restore stability following the unrest earlier this year.
Weapons Recovery and Prisoner Recapture
PM Karki said security agencies have so far recovered 821 of the stolen weapons taken during the protests. She added that the new leadership in Nepal Police has been moving decisively to strengthen security operations.
She also reported that 7,000 inmates who escaped during the unrest have been tracked down and returned to correctional facilities. In total, 14,555 prisoners had fled from prisons and reform centers nationwide on Bhadra 24 during the Gen-Z protests.
Election Preparedness and Opposition Concerns
The CPN–UML has continued to raise concerns about the overall security environment, arguing that missing weapons and unaccounted inmates have created uncertainty ahead of the elections. The party has also pushed for the reinstatement of the House of Representatives, assigning former Chief Whip Mahesh Bartola and lawmaker Sunita Baral to file a petition at the Supreme Court.
PM Karki, however, said the government is fully prepared to hold elections. She noted that the Election Commission has already completed 60 percent of its preparations and has all the resources it needs. “We started election-related work within three days of taking office. The Commission has the tools and support required. We are confident the elections will take place as planned,” she said.
