Janakpur – Senior Nepali Congress leader and Member of Parliament Bimalendra Nidhi has expressed serious concern over the weakening spirit of cooperation in the functioning of local governments. During an interaction with party leaders and cadres in Janakpur on Saturday, Nidhi said that increasing political rivalry and a trend of non-cooperation at the local level are obstructing the development process.
Aiming his criticism at the CPN-UML, Nidhi accused the party of creating unnecessary obstructions in the budget approval process in several municipalities. “Some municipalities are being pushed into deadlock by introducing procedural measures aimed at curtailing the authority of elected mayors,” he stated. “The collective decision-making process is being ignored, which is deeply regrettable.”
Erosion of Trust Within Coalition and Call for Introspection
Citing Narayan Municipality as an example, Nidhi claimed that the municipal assembly there has not even been allowed to convene. He described such conduct as a violation of basic political decorum. “Parties that accept limiting a Prime Minister’s powers during cabinet decisions are now attempting to reduce the authority of mayors at the local level,” he remarked.
The Congress leader warned that such behavior undermines mutual trust and weakens the cooperative spirit among coalition partners. He emphasized that the Nepali Congress remains committed to consensus, coordination, and collective efforts in governance.
Nidhi further criticized the tendency of blocking or rejecting development plans due to personal or political vendettas, urging all stakeholders to engage in serious introspection. He warned that continuing such practices could significantly derail long-term development objectives in municipalities.
