Kathmandu — Five senior leaders from the Nepali Congress have shared their worries about former President Bidhya Devi Bhandari’s decision to return to active politics. They say this move goes against the spirit of the Constitution and needs careful consideration.
On Tuesday, former Deputy Speakers Gopalman Shrestha and Vijay Kumar Gachhadar, former General Secretaries Prakashman Singh and Krishna Prasad Sitaula, and former Joint General Secretary Dr. Prakashsharan Mahat met with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at his home in Budhanilkantha to share their concerns.
Shrestha said, “We told Deuba that it’s not right for former President Bhandari to come back to politics and make a mockery of the republic. This goes against the spirit of the Constitution.”
According to them, once someone has held the highest office of the president, going back into active politics is politically wrong. Shrestha added, “There is no higher political position than the presidency. Leaving that post and returning to politics is simply not proper.”
President Deuba has also informed Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli about the issue. He said he personally believes former presidents should not return to active politics.
Meanwhile, former President Bhandari has announced that she will rejoin active politics with the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), a move that has sparked significant political debate.
