Nepal Electricity Authority Projects Lower Power Demand During Tihar Festival, Assures Stable Supply

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) expects lower electricity demand during this year’s Tihar festival as industries and businesses shut down, while assuring a stable power supply across Nepal.

Kathmandu, Nepal – The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has projected that electricity demand will decrease during this year’s Tihar festival, citing closures in industrial, hotel and restaurant sectors.

NEA’s Executive Director Manoj Silwal said recent years have shown a pattern whereby household consumption rises, but the larger drop in industrial usage results in an overall decline during the holiday period.

He emphasised that Nepal’s power-system infrastructure has significantly improved and is fully able to meet the reduced peak demand without supply constraints. “Our generation and distribution capacity are robust; we are confident there will be no shortage during Tihar or the upcoming Chhath festival,” he said.

To ensure uninterrupted supply, NEA has completed maintenance work on distribution lines and substations, and will deploy technical teams nationwide on standby during the festival period.

This contrasts with earlier years when Tihar often triggered a spike in household electricity use and overall load. With many factories, hotels and restaurants halting operations, the Authority forecasts a dip in aggregated demand this season.
