Nepal MP Rekha Sharma Demands Clear Provision on Principals’ Benefits in Education Bill

CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Rekha Sharma has called for explicit provisions in Nepal’s Education Bill to guarantee principals’ benefits at par with top civil servants, warning that vague language in the draft undermines the role’s dignity.

Kathmandu — CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Rekha Sharma has called for explicit provisions in Nepal’s Education Bill regarding the service facilities and benefits of school principals.

Speaking at Thursday’s meeting of the Education, Health and Information Technology Committee in Singha Durbar, Sharma stressed that principals should receive facilities equivalent to those enjoyed by the highest-ranking civil servants.

She said, “Since principals lead the country’s education system, their service facilities must be ensured through clear legal provisions. Using vague terms such as ‘as determined’ does not reflect the dignity and importance of their role.”

Sharma expressed dissatisfaction with the current draft of the bill, which only states that benefits will be provided “as determined.” She argued that this language remains ambiguous and incomplete. “Merely adding a few hundred rupees as an allowance will not uphold the prestige of the principal’s position,” she remarked. “Instead, the bill should explicitly state the scale and nature of the facilities to be guaranteed.”

Sharma urged the government and the parliamentary committee to recognize the principal’s role as a cornerstone of Nepal’s education system and to ensure their service benefits are written into the law in concrete terms.
