Bhaktapur — CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has alleged that during the September 9 (Bhadra 24) unrest, there was a coordinated plan to assassinate him and seriously injure Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Oli claimed that if he had left his Baluwatar residence just five minutes later, he would have been killed.
Violent Turn of Events and Security Response
Speaking at a gathering in Gundu, Bhaktapur, Oli recounted how the demonstrations suddenly turned violent, leaving him unprepared. “If we had been five minutes late, the incident would have taken a completely different turn. The plan was to kill me and seriously injure Mr. Deuba,” he said.
Oli stated that as the unrest escalated, even the security agencies admitted they could not contain the situation. He resigned as Prime Minister at around 2 p.m. that afternoon and was later airlifted by a Nepal Army helicopter to Shivapuri. “In the end, it was the army that evacuated me. Within minutes, they got us out,” he recalled.
Call for Resilience and Warning Against Infiltration
Describing the incident as a grave criminal conspiracy, Oli urged his supporters not to lose morale. “This was the kind of plot that could set the entire country on fire. It was nothing short of a national-level criminal act,” he said, emphasizing that UML would not allow such incidents to happen again.
He admitted there were shortcomings within his own party, which failed to protect state property during the unrest. “We were somewhat unprepared. We never imagined that the situation would escalate to the point of trying to burn down the nation’s central institutions,” he reflected.
The UML chair further alleged that “criminal and traitorous forces” had infiltrated positions of authority. Oli vowed that such elements, once identified, would gradually be brought under control.
