Former Prime Minister and CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said the government had not issued any orders for security forces to open fire during the September 8 protest. The demonstration, called by Gen-Z, turned violent near the Parliament building, where gunfire left 17 people dead.
Oli’s Constitution Day Statement and Call for Investigation
Issuing a message on Constitution Day, Oli clarified that the protest was planned as peaceful but was infiltrated by outside elements. He said infiltrators triggered violence, which led to the loss of young lives.
“The government had not instructed security personnel to target protesters,” Oli said, adding that automatic weapons—allegedly not under police control—were used during the clash. He called for an impartial investigation into the incident.
Expressing grief, Oli extended condolences to victims’ families and wished for the recovery of the injured. He alleged that after his resignation, Singha Durbar, political offices, and private homes of leaders were deliberately set on fire.
“These acts of destruction reflect a deeper conspiracy,” he said. He added that time would reveal the truth behind such plots.
Warning of Conspiracy and Appeal for National Unity
Oli questioned whether Nepal was progressing or if a fabricated narrative of decline was fueling public anger. He warned that Nepal’s sovereignty and unity were under attack and said citizens should take it as a wake-up call.
Oli urged Nepalis of all generations to unite in defense of the constitution and sovereignty. “Sovereignty is our existence, and the constitution is our shield of independence,” he said. “Only unity can overcome this crisis.”
