Jammu, India — At least 45 people have died after a cloudburst struck the Chashoti area of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials confirmed on Friday. District Commissioner Pankaj Sharma told the BBC the toll has been verified and warned that the scale of destruction could be even higher.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rajendra Kumar said 35 bodies have been brought to Kishtwar District Hospital so far, with 11 victims identified. Officials fear the number of deaths will continue to rise. Local authorities said around 70 people are being treated for injuries at block and district hospitals.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary said the number of injured could reach 100. According to news agency ANI, the disaster triggered a sudden flash flood in the area, which serves as the starting point for the Machail Mata pilgrimage. Witnesses reported a large crowd at the site when the incident occurred.
The Indian Army’s White Knight Corps said rescue and relief efforts are in full swing. Five teams of 60 soldiers each, along with medical units, have been deployed, and the search for missing people continues.
The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister’s Office has released helpline and control room numbers for public assistance. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has canceled the August 15 “At Home” tea reception and the morning Independence Day cultural program.
President Droupadi Murmu offered condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sympathy and assured that all necessary assistance for relief work would be provided.
Abdullah said he has spoken by phone with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to update him on the situation and the progress of rescue operations.
