Kathmandu — Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has begun preparations to revoke the licenses of institutional schools registered under its jurisdiction but no longer in operation. The KMC Education Department said on-site monitoring of such schools is underway, and further procedures for license cancellation will follow.
Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol confirmed that three alternative schools — Mahila Jyoti, Jyana, and James Namuna — have been granted permission to relocate. She added that 25 schools have received approval for name changes.
School Approvals and Curriculum Expansion
According to Dangol, the city’s education committee is currently discussing issues such as adding new classes and subjects in community and institutional schools, name and location changes, ownership transfers, cancellation of permits for defunct schools, and relocation of alternative schools.
Ranidevi Secondary School in Ranibari has been approved to run Grade 10 from the 2082 academic session. Similarly, Pashupati Mitra, Geetamata, Janakalyan, Janpath, and Nepal Adarsha Secondary Schools have been permitted to introduce technical courses in Civil and Computer Engineering at Grade 12.
The metropolis is also preparing to grant approval to 12 more schools for adding new classes and subjects. In addition, 21 schools that submitted documents for name changes have been approved. The Education and Health Committee has been tasked with drafting guidelines for school relocations, to be presented at the next committee meeting.
Budget, Reforms, and Task Force
For the education budget of fiscal years 2082–83 and to review the relevance of the “Book Free Friday” program, the metropolis has directed the Education and Health Committee to submit a report with recommendations within 15 days.
To improve community schools, a task force led by Dr. Surya Raj Kafle has been formed. The task force will provide a report with recommendations on school operation standards, resource mapping, physical infrastructure, educational quality, and long-term planning.
The Education Department also stated it will study and implement the registration of Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs and educational statutes.
