Kathmandu, — A Kathmandu District Court hearing has been scheduled in the extortion case against Durga Prasai and two others accused of organized criminal extortion. The case will be heard before Judge Vishnu Prasad Upadhyay.
Earlier, on Magh 6, 2081 BS (January 20, 2025), the court ordered the accused to be released on bail of NPR 300,000 each. The three accused are charged with extorting criminal benefits through an organized scheme.
Among the accused, Harichandra Phuyal was arrested in India and brought back to Kathmandu by Nepal’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). Investigations revealed Phuyal threatened Nepali businessmen over the phone from India.
Phuyal allegedly used the name of Indian gangster leader Lawrence Bishnoi to intimidate Nepalese businessmen. According to police, Phuyal threatened those who did not support the “Campaign to Protect Nation, Nationality, Religion, Culture, and Citizens,” led by Durga Prasai, warning of severe consequences.
Alongside Phuyal, Durga Prasai from Panchthar and Ramchandra Mainali, originally from Tehrathum but residing in Birtamod, are also accused. Durga Prasai has been a controversial figure in political and social debates.
