JSP: Gen-Z Demands in Nepal Require Constitutional Amendment, Not Promises

The Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSP) has said the Gen-Z movement’s demands cannot be met with promises alone. The party insists on constitutional reform, criticizes the government’s handling of protests, and calls for accountability over international repercussions.

Kathmandu – The Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSP) has stated that the rising discontent in the country and the demands raised by the Gen-Z movement cannot be addressed merely with promises or superficial commitments. The party stressed that meaningful change is impossible without amending — or, if necessary, rewriting — the current constitution.

Constitutional Reform Required

In a statement issued after its central executive committee meeting on September 21, JSP said that fundamental reforms are necessary in governance, the electoral system, the judiciary, constitutional bodies, provincial structures, identity, and inclusivity.

The party emphasized that the House of Representatives should have remained intact, arguing that its dissolution was not in line with the constitution. JSP warned that upcoming elections would not resolve long-standing issues raised by transformative forces. Instead, even with a new parliament, the country risks returning to the status quo.

Criticism of Government Actions

JSP accused the government of mishandling the Gen-Z protests, calling its response irresponsible. The party argued that dialogue could have resolved the demands, but the state chose the path of power projection and repression instead.

Although JSP had urged the government to address the Gen-Z movement’s legitimate concerns by September 8, the party noted that, instead, violent crackdowns took place. Dozens of youths lost their lives and thousands were injured, worsening instability nationwide.

International Repercussions and Accountability

The party also expressed concern over the suspension of working, tourist, and visit visas for Nepali citizens by some foreign countries. JSP held Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s administration responsible for these diplomatic consequences.

JSP demanded an immediate investigation into those responsible for harming the nation and called for legal action against them. The party further urged the government to provide compensation to those affected during the protests.
