91 Detainees Still Missing After Police Custody Escape in Jhapa

Ninety-one detainees who escaped from police custody during the Gen-Z movement in Jhapa are still missing. Authorities confirmed that most of the looted weapons have been recovered, but 24 remain unaccounted for as the search continues.

Jhapa — Ninety-one detainees who fled from police custody during the recent Gen-Z movement remain unaccounted for, according to police. On September 9, protesters set fire to police stations in Birtamod, Damak, and Jhiljhile, enabling 92 detainees to escape.

District Police Office spokesperson Khagendra Bahadur Khadka said that one detainee has since returned voluntarily, while the others are still missing. Police reported that 51 detainees escaped from the Anarmani Area Police Office in Birtamod, 36 from Damak, and five from Jhiljhile. Authorities say search operations are ongoing to trace those still at large.

Looted Weapons and Ongoing Search

During the incident, protesters also seized 99 weapons from the police offices. Of these, 75 have been recovered. The recovered weapons include 11 SLRs, 26 INSAS rifles, 18 .303 rifles, five shotguns, six gas guns, six revolvers, and three submachine guns (SMGs).

Police confirmed that 24 weapons remain missing along with the 91 detainees. “Our search efforts are ongoing and have been intensified,” spokesperson Khadka said.
