Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has assured that the government will make important changes to some proposed laws after hearing what people have been talking about and worrying over.
On Tuesday morning, after a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar, Minister Lekhak spoke with journalists and said that more detailed discussions are needed on several key issues — like polygamy, the legal age for marriage, anticipatory bail, and pardons or sentence reductions. To dig deeper into these topics, a special subcommittee has been formed within the legislative committee.
He explained, “Some parts of the proposed laws on polygamy, marriage age, bail before trial, and the President’s power to grant pardons need further review. So, we’ve created a subcommittee to carefully look at these areas again.”
At the meeting, they also talked about changes proposed to five major laws: the Muluki Criminal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Civil Code, Civil Procedure Code, and sentencing laws.
Minister Lekhak added that the subcommittee will work closely with the relevant ministries, gather their opinions, and have more discussions before finalizing the changes. After that, the legislative committee will approve the updated bills.
He also said the Ministry of Law will be involved, and the legislative committee secretary will make sure everything is well coordinated.
The meeting also focused on when polygamy might be legally allowed. Minister Lekhak called the meeting specifically to discuss the proposed amendments about legalizing polygamy under certain conditions.
