Hit Bahadur Tamang: Only Fair Elections Can Bring Stability in Nepal

CPN (Maoist Centre) leader Hit Bahadur Tamang has said Nepal is in political uncertainty and that only credible elections can bring stability.

Kathmandu — Senior leader of the CPN (Maoist Centre) Hit Bahadur Tamang has said that Nepal is passing through a period of political uncertainty and that only fair elections can ensure stability. Speaking at an interview organized by the Reporters’ Club in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Tamang expressed concern over the role of the interim government and the overall political leadership.

He said the interim government, formed with a commitment to hold elections within six months, has yet to gain public confidence. “The question of whether the elections will actually take place has left the political atmosphere in uncertainty,” he said.

Tamang also spoke about the GenZ Movement, noting that it failed to deliver the expected results. “The GenZ movement, though short-lived, brought little change. Apart from replacing former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli with Sushila Karki, there was no significant achievement,” he added.

According to Tamang, the Maoist Centre now sees elections as the only legitimate solution. “Public frustration is increasing, but the answer lies in the people’s mandate. The government must guarantee free, fair, and peaceful elections,” he stated.

He further said that the government should build trust among civil society and political parties. “Only when everyone believes the election will be impartial can the country move toward political stability,” he said.

Referring to the GenZ demand for a directly elected executive, Tamang said the Maoist Centre had raised this idea two decades ago. “However, the recent movement hastily pushed for the dissolution of parliament, which hijacked the constitutional process,” he said.
