Gagan Thapa Affirms Nepal’s Elections Will Be Held on Time

Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has assured that elections in Nepal will be held on time, highlighting the country’s record of free and fair polls while cautioning lawmakers on electoral law changes.

Kathmandu – Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has stressed that periodic elections in Nepal will be held on time, saying no force can undermine the constitutional provision for timely polls.

Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Sunday, Thapa contrasted Nepal’s practice with several South Asian countries where elections are frequently delayed or reduced to formality. He said Nepal has consistently upheld the principle of free and fair polls, and that this tradition remains secure.

“While many of our neighbors struggle to conduct elections on time, Nepal holds them regularly. The strength of our democracy lies in ensuring that elections are free and fair,” Thapa noted.

Referring to the government’s bill to amend and unify electoral laws, Thapa cautioned that some of the recommendations submitted by the Election Commission might be omitted when tabled in parliament. He urged lawmakers and stakeholders to remain vigilant and protect essential provisions.

Thapa also pointed out positive features in the draft, particularly the proposal allowing party members in constituencies to select candidates themselves. He emphasized the importance of expanding voter education to strengthen democratic participation.

According to him, parliament retains full authority to refine the bill further. “We have already made useful contributions in improving the draft, and additional adjustments can be made as needed,” he added.
