Kathmandu – The Nepali Congress has taken a clear stance on the controversial cooling-off period for public office, stating it will not make any compromise. Speaking at an event in Kathmandu to mark BP Koirala Memorial Day, party spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat said the Congress remains firmly committed to the decision already agreed upon in the parliamentary committee.
“That consensus was reached by all sides. We’re not going back on it. This isn’t something Congress is willing to compromise on,” Dr. Mahat said. The debate has resurfaced in the National Assembly, where lawmakers from the CPN-UML have proposed scrapping the cooling-off period from the current bill. Congress has made it clear it will not support that move.
Dr. Mahat also warned against pushing key legislation—like the land bill—without proper dialogue, calling such one-sided approaches unacceptable. “In a coalition government, things have to move forward in a balanced and fair way,” he noted.
He also expressed concern over the growing influence of misinformation in shaping public opinion. “It’s troubling that people who spread falsehoods are being seen as the ones telling the truth,” he added.
