Bidya Devi Bhandari Returns to Active Politics, Eyes CPN-UML Leadership

Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has re-entered active politics, aiming to lead the CPN-UML. She confirmed her decision in an interview with Image Television, highlighting her dialogue with party chairman KP Sharma Oli and her readiness to serve the nation.

Kathmandu – Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has re-entered active politics with a clear intention to assume leadership, particularly within the CPN-UML party. After serving two consecutive terms as the head of state, Bhandari now signals her ambition to take on a central role in her political party.

In an exclusive interview with Image Television, Bhandari confirmed that her return to politics is aimed at leading the CPN-UML. She revealed that she has already informed the current party chairman, KP Sharma Oli, of her decision and has officially renewed her party membership. “This is a clear expression of my intent,” she stated. “The time for a formal announcement will come, but everything will be clarified in due course.”

During the interview with journalist Jagadish Kharel, Bhandari was direct about her political ambitions. When asked whether her reentry into the CPN-UML was driven by the goal of becoming the party chairperson, she replied, “There’s no need to hide it anymore. I have returned with the intention to lead.”

Leadership Intentions and Dialogue with KP Sharma Oli

Having completed two terms as President, Bhandari did not rule out the possibility of becoming Prime Minister in the future. “I have voluntarily given up all state privileges and decided to serve the people. I am ready to do whatever is needed for the betterment of the country,” she said.

Bhandari mentioned that she has been in regular communication with KP Sharma Oli and claimed that her decision has been well received. “He has extended his best wishes to me. I believe he supports my move,” she noted.

On the topic of future leadership within the CPN-UML, Bhandari remarked, “Mr. Oli has already served two terms as party chair. He is not someone who insists on holding the same position indefinitely. From what I know, he is not the type to retake an exam he has already passed.”

Call for Generational Change in UML Leadership

Emphasizing the need for generational change, she added, “No individual can lead the party forever. It is time for the new generation to have opportunities, and I strongly believe in that.”

Addressing remarks made by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-UML Chairman Oli about her political comeback, Bhandari responded calmly. “I am a daughter of this nation. Nepal no longer has a monarchy. Why should my return to politics be questioned?” she asked.

Responding to concerns that a former president’s return to active politics might undermine the dignity of the office or the political system, she dismissed such views. “These are idle comments. One’s integrity is proven through actions, not by titles,” she asserted.

Bhandari’s political reentry is a significant development in Nepal’s political landscape, particularly within the CPN-UML, as the party approaches a potential leadership transition. Whether her return reshapes party dynamics or signals a broader shift remains to be seen.
