The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft took off from Ahmedabad Airport at approximately 1:38 PM, heading towards London Gatwick.

Crash Near Airport Cargo Area Sparks Rescue Operations

However, just minutes after takeoff, the plane crashed near the cargo area adjacent to the airport. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported seeing a massive fireball. Onboard the ill-fated flight were two pilots, 10 cabin crew members, and 230 passengers. Indian media sources have indicated that the passenger list included the name of Vijay Rupani, former Chief Minister of Gujarat.

It remains unconfirmed whether it was Rupani himself or someone with the same name. Following the accident, local police, fire services, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams quickly rushed to the site. Seven fire engines and numerous ambulances are actively involved in rescue operations. Nearby hospitals have placed their emergency wards on high alert to treat the injured.

In the wake of the crash, India’s Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel by phone, assuring full support and assistance. An immediate investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched. Air India confirmed the accident via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating: “Today, June 12, 2025, flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London was involved in an accident. Further details are being gathered and will be shared soon.”

Reports from multiple sources indicate that the crash happened between two to five minutes after takeoff. Initial assessments suggest that technical malfunction or loss of control by the pilot could be the potential causes, though official confirmation is still awaited.
