kathmandu __ A tragic plane crash in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad has claimed the lives of at least 100 people, according to confirmed reports. The aircraft involved in the accident was Air India’s AI-171 flight, which was carrying a total of 242 individuals, including 12 crew members.

The Boeing aircraft, which took off at around 1:40 PM, was heading to London from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. However, just minutes after departure, the plane encountered technical problems and crashed approximately two minutes into the flight.

Passengers from Multiple Countries, Including a Former Gujarat Chief Minister

According to available details, the passengers onboard included 169 Indian nationals, 53 from the United Kingdom, 7 from Portugal, and 1 from Canada. Among those on the flight was former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, who was reportedly on his way to visit his daughter living in London.

Local residents reported witnessing the aircraft struggling to gain altitude. Shortly after takeoff, the plane began to lose balance and descended rapidly. Eventually, the aircraft crashed onto a residential building, reportedly a housing complex for medical professionals. At least 15 doctors present in the building sustained injuries.

Fire, Smoke, and Immediate Government Response

A massive explosion followed by a fire was heard at the time of impact. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising into the sky, and videos of the crash have since gone viral on social media.

Following the incident, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah immediately traveled to Ahmedabad. Since both leaders were born in Gujarat, they are personally visiting the crash site to assess the situation.

Although Air India has issued a preliminary statement, the airline has yet to officially confirm the exact number of casualties or identities of the deceased. Reports from the ground indicate that the area surrounding the crash site is covered in ash.

Rescue teams are working to contain the fire and retrieve the bodies from the wreckage. The recovered bodies are being kept at a government hospital in Ahmedabad for identification and further procedures.
