Kathmandu — Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker Sovita Gautam clarified on Wednesday that her statements made in the House of Representatives on Tuesday were misunderstood, which led to controversy. Speaking during the parliamentary session, Gautam said the distortion of her remarks occurred due to an incorrect understanding of the Nepali language.
Clarification on Misunderstood Remarks and Resulting Controversy
Gautam stressed that she did not accuse or make negative comments about any individual. She specifically clarified that she never said everyone who accompanied the Prime Minister to an event in Spain failed to return. She explained there is a clear difference between saying “no one returned from the event the Prime Minister attended” and “no one returned after going with the Prime Minister.”
She also revealed that pressure was exerted to remove her remarks from the parliamentary record after the opposition boycotted the session. “After our boycott, it became clear my statement was being asked to be deleted. I learned that the Prime Minister’s Secretariat had raised objections, and some lawmakers insulted me by calling me ‘a mischievous kid,’” she stated.
Gautam expressed her intention to clarify the matter as evidence of her party’s and her own responsibility. “I have never said that everyone who went with the Prime Minister failed to return. Please listen carefully and understand my words,” she urged. She questioned why her remarks were removed from the official record and added, “It should not be deleted because some MPs have difficulty understanding Nepali. Misinterpretation of my words is not my problem.”
MP Sovita Gautam’s parliament clarification rejects the controversy around her remarks and presents her position clearly to the public.
